Subject Complement and Object Complement
In English grammar we have something called a subject complement as well as an object complement. A subject complement defines or describes the subject of the sentence, whereas the object complement completes the meaning of the verb and modifies, names, or renames the direct object.

Cleft Sentences and Inversions: How to Add Emphasis in English
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Месяц назад
Cleft sentences are used to emphasize different parts of a sentence depending on which part is most important. We use cleft sentences (especially in writing) because we are not able to show emphasis with our voice, and we can use inversions to add variety to our sentence structures. @WritingBetter Mam please answer this question 1. Choose the correct combined sentence. There was a heavy traffic. I could not reach the office in time. A) Inspite of heavy traffic I could reach the office in time. B) Inspite of heavy traffic I did not reach the office in time. C) I reach the office in time despite the heavy traffic. D) Inspite of heavy traffic I can reach the office in time.

      Due to the heavy traffic, I could not reach the office in time. “In spite of” means even though something was true, you were able to do something. “Despite the” would also mean the same.

      With the information given to combine into one sentence, none of the 4 answers would be correct. If the given information was: There was heavy traffic. I "could" reach the office in time. Then, (A) would be correct. "In spite of heavy traffic, I could reach the office in time." ("In spite of heavy traffic, I was able to reach the office in time." would be better.)

But, I would agree that you could also ask, He took what to sleep? some pills. I think the example was not a good clear example and so it has caused confusion. @@WritingBetter would you tell me about the best part to include Cleft or inversion , IS it within the intro , body or conclusion ! What IS its natural place . The start of a paragraph, mid or by the end of each ?

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter 20 дней назад

      A cleft sentence is used to emphasize a certain part of the sentence. The inversion is very similar. This means that if you want to emphasize a certain word or idea, you may want to use one of these types of sentences. However, you do not want to overuse either of these. It is possible to use them anywhere in your writing, but you should use them sparingly or it will sound unnatural or forced.

    I heard that prepositional phrases can act as nouns as well. e.g. Behind the door is a little girl. For the above sentence, some teachers say that the phrase "Behind the door" is a noun since it is in the position of the subject. But I think that it's simply not true and the phrase here is following the rule of "Inversion" which is an advanced grammatical area. What is your take on this? Please let me know what's the case. And if you've got any reference to counter my statement, kindly provide it. 🙂

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter 23 дня назад

      “Behind the door” is the subject of this sentence. This prepositional phrase is acting like a noun. The sentence could be written: There is a little girl behind the door. So, you are correct that the example sentence is an inversion of this second sentence. I hope this helps.

    • @kakarotgoku3869
      @kakarotgoku3869 23 дня назад

      @@WritingBetter Could you please provide the reference? It's a humble request. I need to show this to my teacher because the explanation I gave earlier was the one my teacher gave me.He told me that it's not a noun phrase but an adverbial phrase of place. Also, it was flatly stated in "Cliffs TOEFL" that a noun phrase cannot begin with a preposition. That's why I'm asking for a counter reference from another book to prove my teacher wrong and show him that a prepositional phrase can also function like a noun phrase. Thanks for your clarification.🙂

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter 22 дня назад

      A prepositional phrase can act like a noun, but not as a noun phrase (because a noun phrase cannot begin with a preposition). Is that also why we have prepositional phrases as an object of a tri-transitive verb, since only a noun can act as the subject or the object of the verb in a sentence?Is it why we sometimes consider the prepositional phrase as a noun phrase ,since it is acting as the subject of the sentence and only nouns can be the subject or the object? My doubt is his leaving is gerund thats ok But "without saying good bye" in this "saying" is it "gerund" or "present participle " as English rule before a noun we have an adjective but here saying is noun & good bye is also noun and "without" is preposition after preposition we should have object. Here what is object of the preposition "saying" or " good bye" pls explain TQ 🙏

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter 25 дней назад

      Thanks for your question. The basic sentence here is: His leaving (without saying goodbye) was rude and disrespectful. "His leaving" is the subject, so the word "leaving" is not used as a verb here. In this example the gerund phrase "saying goodbye" is the object of the preposition "without". Here is another similar example: Studying a new language is difficult without practicing daily. "practicing daily" is the gerund phrase and is the object of the preposition "without". I hope this helps.

      The word “then” is not a subordinating conjunction, so it cannot be used in this sentence as it is. This is why we need to add the comma and the conjunction “and” to make this sentence correct. I ask AI this and AI respond blow. is it true? "It was the hospital that Tom went yesterday." can i change it? : "It was the hospital where Tom went yesterday." Yes, you can change the sentence to “It was the hospital where Tom went yesterday.” This revised sentence is grammatically correct and sounds more natural. The word “where” is used as a relative pronoun to introduce a clause that specifies the place that Tom went to, which in this case, is the hospital. It’s a common and appropriate way to provide clarity in a sentence that refers to a location. 😊
